TRASTEVERE, BASILICA DI SANTA MARIA, CASTELBELLO SANT’ ANGELO AND IL VERO ALFREDO! (Friday, 9-10-2021)

This morning we all woke up feeling SO MUCH BETTER!  John made a delicious breakfast and we all decided to take a hike to Trastevere, a town Rick Steve’s refers to as a “funky, bohemian area”.

We walked for about twenty minutes along the Tiber River until we reached Trastevere.

Our first stop was the Basilica Di San Crisogono.

We browsed in a couple of shops along what looked to be the Main Street through town.  We were a bit underwhelmed.  We stopped at a cafe along the street for lunch, which was wonderful.  John was thrilled…he had his first Bloody Mary of the trip!  He said it was good, but if you’ve ever had a John Diedam Bloody Mary, you’d agree, it, too, was a bit underwhelming.

Our next stop was another church, Basilica Di Santa Maria.  This is the one that Rick Steve’s talks about and it was truly beautiful.

When we exited the church, we couldn’t believe it!  It was like the town had just woken up!  People were everywhere, darling cafes were open with their tables spilling out into the streets, and little shops had their doors open showing off the treasures they held inside!  Trastevere was redeemed in our eyes!  The town even offered funky Covid testing sites!

John reminded us about a little cafe to be on the lookout for, called Rugantina.  Apparently it is an Instagram hit.  We turned the corner and, lo and behold, there it was!  So, of course, we HAD to take pictures!

Oh Trastevere, we found you utterly charming!

We walked back toward our Airbnb and passed by the Castel Sant’ Angelo, commonly known as Castle of the Holy Angel.  It was built in 123-139 AD.

John has done some shopping of his own this trip!  Yup, a Hard Rock t-shirt was purchased in every city that has had a Hard Rock store!  (Don’t worry, Jason—we did NOT buy you one!)

After a brief respite, it was time to walk to dinner!  Walking in Roma is wonderful, however, challenging! These cobblestones are EVERYWHERE and do NOT make walking easy!

We had reservations for dinner tonight at Il Vero Alfredo, where Fettuccine Alfredo was discovered!  (Thanks Dave and Michelle for the recommendation!)

The Alfredo was absolute perfection!  It was made with butter, Parmesan cheese and a bit of olive oil and it was amazing!

It seems everyone and their brother loves Il Vero Alfredo!

Another great day is in the books for Team Giovanni and it was a good one!
